Yalla CHamchamal: save Water
Climate security in Chamchamal, Sulaimaniyah, is severely undermined by environmental degradation, political tensions, and inadequate government planning. The region faces a sharp decline in clean water for drinking and irrigation, impacting agricultural areas like Takia, Shorsh, Qadir Karam, and Qarahanjir. Water scarcity is fueling social and economic instability in neighborhoods like Aghjalar and Takia, while land disputes in Shorsh exacerbate tensions. The militarization of Chamchamal has further intensified these issues, with water resources increasingly weaponized, heightening the risk of violence. Weak governance and lack of conflict resolution mechanisms leave communities vulnerable to exploitation and migration.
While local NGOs offer temporary relief, sustainable, community-driven solutions are urgently needed. Raising awareness and integrating government action is critical for long-term resilience. Effective climate adaptation in Chamchamal requires public education, inclusive dialogue, stronger governance, and strategies to address both immediate and long-term water scarcity.
What is the crucial challenge?
A key challenge is the lack of awareness among students and professionals in water-intensive industries, such as park workers, car washers, and farmers. Students in Chamchamal need education on water scarcity to become informed decision-makers and community leaders. Teaching them the importance of water conservation will foster sustainable habits and empower them to address climate change.
Similarly, professionals in water-dependent sectors must be educated on water scarcity and climate change to prevent inefficient practices that worsen the issue. Increasing their awareness will promote sustainable water use and reduce environmental impact.
A three-pillar solution is proposed to address these challenges.
First Pillar
The first pillar focuses on (youth- and women-led) public awareness and education campaigns, both online and offline, including boot camp trainings for 18 youth and women in Chamchamal, and intensive campaign trainings to equip the six selected campaigners with skills to design and run a public awareness campaign.
Second Pillar
The second pillar, involving six campaigners (gender balanced), focuses on providing both online and offline content to raise awareness among the target audience on water scarcity. Through interactive awareness- and pledge signing events, participants will commit to adopting water-saving habits, reaching 250 students at various high schools and Charmo university, as well as 45 park and industrial workers from the public and private sectors. This will aim to enhance effective water management practices and deepen their understanding of the environmental impacts associated with their work and lifestyle. Additionally, awareness content, including photos and videos on water scarcity and mitigation strategies, will be produced, published, and monitored on Sparda’s and local social media channels to ensure maximum reach and engagement.
Third Pillar
The third pillar involves creating a local government committee (six members) in collaboration with the Chamchamal Directorate General for Water (DGW) to integrate climate change and water scarcity into the government’s action plan. Both the committee and DGW staff will receive targeted capacity-building programs to enhance understanding, collaboration, and community-driven solutions. This will ensure effective dialogue, addressing immediate needs and long-term strategies for sustainable resource management and reduced tensions.
The project’s goal is to build a resilient, informed community in Chamchamal, capable of managing water scarcity. The committee’s establishment will prioritize these issues on local agendas, promoting peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and sustainable development.
